Tooling installation on a TM servo multi-slide forming machine starts with the central forming die. The forming slides are then aligned to this reference, followed by cam installation, forming tool positioning, press die setup, feed adjustment, and production trials.

The sequence below describes the setup approach for TM machines using forming cams and, where fitted, a double-cam forced-return mechanism. Specific settings depend on the machine model, tooling design, and part requirements.

Tooling installation and adjustment should be performed by trained personnel following the machine manual and applicable energy-isolation procedures. Before any trial movement, confirm that tooling is securely fastened and that the forming area is clear. Use the machine’s designated setup mode and restore energy isolation before further mechanical adjustments.

1. Install the Central Forming Die

Install and secure the central forming die in its designated mounting position.

This die provides the reference for aligning the forming slides and positioning the individual forming tools. Confirm that the mounting surfaces are clean and that the die is correctly seated before proceeding.

2. Align the Forming Slides to the Central Die

Using the central forming die as the reference, fine-adjust the parallelism of each forming slide.

Accurate alignment helps the tools approach the die in the intended direction. Misalignment can affect bend consistency, tool contact, and finished-part dimensions.

Check each slide against the alignment requirements supplied for the tooling.

3. Return to Home Position and Install the Cams

Return the machine to its specified home position before installing the forming cams and, where applicable, the double-cam forced-return mechanism.

Confirm that each cam is installed at the correct home reference position. This establishes the intended relationship between the machine cycle and the forming-slide movements.

Follow the machine-specific installation references rather than estimating cam positions from appearance.

4. Install the Forming Tools at the Supplied Reference Points

Install each forming tool using the positioning reference points provided by TM.

During initial setup, keep the tools slightly backed off from their final working positions to provide clearance for material entry and reduce the risk of tool interference.

This initial clearance is a setup allowance. The final working positions are established during the subsequent forming trials.

5. Install the Press Die and Verify Its Working Position

Install the press die and confirm the required die height and bottom dead center position.

Check that the punch and die are correctly aligned and that the working position matches the tooling specifications. Incorrect settings can affect punching quality or cause tooling damage.

Secure the die components before trial operation.

6. Adjust the Material Feed Length

Set the feeding mechanism so that the feed length matches the developed blank length specified for the part.

Confirm that the material follows the intended feed path and is properly guided into the tooling area. Accurate feeding is essential because feed errors can affect both hole positions and subsequent forming operations.

7. Conduct a Material-Feeding Trial

Feed material through the machine using the designated setup or trial mode.

During this initial trial, check:

  • The positions of the holes produced by the press die.
  • Material entry and clearance around the forming tools.
  • The correct operation of each installed detector.

Confirm that the detectors respond as intended before continuing with production trials.

8. Adjust the Press Die’s Left-to-Right Position

Based on the hole positions observed during the feeding trial, adjust the press die’s left-to-right position as required.

The objective is to align the punched features with their specified locations and the subsequent forming operations.

Before moving the die, follow the required energy-isolation procedure. After adjustment, secure the die and repeat the positioning check.

9. Repeat Production Trials Until the Part Meets the Drawing

Conduct further production trials and inspect the finished parts against the approved drawing.

Refine the forming-tool positions and other permitted setup parameters as required. Inspection should cover the relevant dimensions, hole locations, bend angles, and specified quality requirements.

Continue the adjustment and inspection cycle until the parts meet the drawing requirements. Then confirm the final tooling security, verify repeatability over a trial batch, and proceed with production according to the approved operating procedure.

Record the Final Setup for Repeat Production

Once the setup has been verified, record the central die position, slide alignment references, cam home positions, forming-tool positions, press die settings, feed length, and detector settings.

A documented setup provides a useful starting point for repeat jobs and helps the team investigate differences during future changeovers.
