1. Straight-Side (Closed-Box) Frame Presses

For any work requiring high-grade accuracy or exceptionally heavy pressure, straight-side presses are preferred over C-frame (gap-frame) presses.

  • Rigidity: Their closed-box construction is much more rigid and eliminates the “angular opening” deflection common in gap presses, which is crucial for maintaining the precise alignment of the upper and lower die.
  • Vibration Control: High-speed versions of these machines use massive construction in the uprights, crown, and bed to eliminate vibration, ensuring high accuracy during rapid cycling.

2. Servo Presses

The servo press is widely regarded as one of the best tools for high-precision forming and coining.

  • BDC Accuracy: Unlike traditional mechanical presses, a servo press can maintain the Bottom Dead Center (BDC) position with extreme precision, automatically compensating for variations in material thickness.
  • Motion Control: They allow for programmable motion profiles, such as slowing the ram speed just before impact to reduce shock and vibration, which significantly improves part quality and tool life.

3. High-Speed Automatic Presses

For high-precision mass production of small, complex parts (such as electronic connectors or lead frames), high-speed automatic presses are the industry standard.

  • Feeding Precision: These machines are integrated with high-precision feeding mechanisms (often within ±0.01 to 0.03 mm) to ensure stable production at speeds exceeding 600–1000 strokes per minute.
  • Consistency: They are typically built on straight-side frames to handle the dynamic loads of high-speed operation without losing accuracy.

4. Specialized Precision Classifications

In practice, machines designated as Special Grade (特級) under industrial standards (such as JIS) are those specifically engineered for thin-plate precision blanking and high-speed precision tasks. For coining, sizing, or precision cold forging where high pressure at the bottom of the stroke is needed, knuckle-joint presses are also a highly effective choice.

In summary, for structural stability, choose a straight-side press. For unmatched BDC accuracy and flexibility, a servo press is best. For automated mass production, a high-speed straight-side automatic press is the optimal selection.
