Reducing vibration in a stamping press requires a combination of process optimization, machine balancing, structural isolation, and proper tooling design. In stamping operations, vibration mainly stems from two sources: the inertial forces of the moving press components (crankshaft, flywheel, slide) and the sudden release of stored elastic energy during material breakthrough (snap-through).

Based on the technical sources, here are the primary methods to suppress press vibration:

1. Tooling & Process Modifications (Reducing Breakthrough Shock)

  • Apply Shear Angles on Punches or Dies (斜刃 / シャー角): Beveling the cutting face of a punch or die allows the tool to shear the sheet metal progressively rather than all at once. This significantly lowers the peak cutting force, smooths out the load curve, and dampens the breakthrough shock.
  • Stagger Punch Heights (階梯沖頭): For multi-punch dies, altering the length of punches so they enter the sheet metal sequentially prevents all punches from impacting the material simultaneously, reducing peak force concentration and severe vibration.
  • Install Hydraulic Shock Absorbers (油壓緩衝器): Adding hydraulic dampers or shock absorbers to the slide or die cushions the sudden downward acceleration and energy surge when the material fractures during blanking.
  • Optimize Punch-to-Die Clearance: Maintaining proper cutting clearance avoids excessive tonnage spikes and double-shearing fracture shocks.

2. Press Motion & Machine Balancing

  • Install Counterweights (動平衡 / バランスウェイト): Mount counterweights on flywheels, crankshaft eccentrics, and reciprocating slide linkages. This balances the rotational and reciprocating inertial forces, preventing continuous structural shaking during high-speed strokes.
  • Utilize Servo or Link-Motion Presses: Servo presses (サーボプレス) and link presses allow custom programming of the slide motion. Slowing down slide velocity right before the punch contacts the workpiece reduces contact impact energy and operational vibration.

3. Foundation & Vibration Isolation (Preventing Transmission)

  • Use Anti-Vibration Mounts (防振材 / 防振装置): Place specialized isolators—such as laminated rubber pads, metal coil springs with dampers, or air springs (空気ばね)—between the press base legs and the floor foundation. Air springs and rubber mounts absorb shock energy and isolate building floors from structural vibrations.
  • Build a Heavy, Isolated Concrete Foundation (防振基礎): Constructing a massive concrete foundation block underneath the press increases system inertia. Physically separating this block from surrounding factory floors using air gaps, cork, or elastomeric barrier pads prevents floor-borne vibration from spreading to adjacent precision machinery.

4. Maintenance & Mechanical Joint Control

  • Eliminate Joint Play: Regularly inspect and adjust clearances in connecting rod bearings, crank pins, and slide guideways. Excessive play in mechanical joints amplifies breakthrough impact and causes severe frame clattering.
  • Verify Bolt Tightness: Inspect frame tie-rods, bolster mounting bolts, and die clamps to ensure no loose fasteners are vibrating under load.
